Rogue Earth > When is the next planetary alignment? > The next planetary alignment...
by: Angela R.

I'm not sure all 9 planets can ever *exactly* align, because the orbits are slightly tilted (and Pluto's incredibly so). However, if I remember correctly, the Voyager missions were launched to take advantage of a rare alignment of the planets that only takes place every 175 years. Voyager 2 was launched on 20 August, 1977, and followed 16 days later by Voyager 1. That would make the next alignments take place in 2152, 2327, 2502, and so on... http://coolcosmos.ipac.caltech.edu/cosmic_kids/AskKids/images/voyager2_path.jpg

In that case, let's go for the ones after that.

I am no astrophysicist but if I understood correctly several sources documentaries, articles and so forth the next would be, unfortunately, in 2012, according to occidental Gregorian calendar which is part of the hike. Double check though

Rogue Earth > Characters > The scientist/genious
by: David Jansson

I think that the genius who understands what has happened is the logical choice to have as a center figure. He doesn't need to be the main character or even have much screen time, but at the very least good friends with the lead protoganists. Then you can introduce the science and speculations through the contact between the genius and the protagonists, thus letting the main characters be average joes, which gives this project a bigger demographic as target.

Indeed, there can be as many specialist characters as necessary in order to deliver exposition. Or can any of them be motivated to anything more extraordinary? Indeed, actually relevant to Transhumanist themes, quirky troubled Holmsian characters are doing well lately in the media. Anyone else merely plays the foil. And what are average Joes like in the world of tomorrow? Only the most remarkable shows actually deliver on the promise of strange new world and at all howsoever display significantly cultures. Given a plot equals problem oriented ripping yarn as herein, rather than a character driven Literature, what becomes most important are characters at all up to the challenges, but not so much as to actually make anything easy. Characters need to be at all up to their challenges, but only barely. No Powderpuff Pitty-Pat! Throughout the plot, the tension and pathos, even discomfort and aversion, of every Technique of suspense in plotting, building tension and anticipation, are all heightened as thing are made more difficult, the personal emotional stakes are raised, and character growth is pressed by worsening complications for an active protagonist, definitely including onstage sex! Virtually all relationships of whatever kind begin with some sort of first discovery, romance even courtship, so to speak, even "the honeymoon," but inevitably and come into conflict on different levels, friction which is normal and even healthy, and in order to survive must reach acceptance in order to commit to substantive cooperation and collaboration. Rogue Earth > The calamity > time dilation and ramifications
by: Aaron Agassi

An additional effect of the gravitational waves that modify the Earth/Moon system's orbital trajectory, will be time dilation: Untill the near passing gravitational beams stop, time on the Earth and on the Moon will slow, relative to frames of reference elsewhere in the Solar System. EDIT: This means that from the Terestrial/Lunar frame of refference, the Solar System has jumped from 2152, the year of the next planetary alignment, into the future, indeed, to the year of the following alignment: 2327, all virtually over night!

No, I am not familiar. Anything applicable at hand? And I hope the plot device as already employed herein is adequately transparent. Is it?

Rogue Earth > Earth as it will be > 2152, at earliest
by: Aaron Agassi

http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/5219 Society and technology have advanced. The Transhuman era is well under way. Oppression, poverty, aging and death, are all things of the past. And this has impacted lifestyle. The 60's will seem so tame by comparison! New civilization flourishes in the deep ocean and the Moon. There is an International Mars base.

Only indirectly, I think, or else sources in common. My Hard Science Fiction influence, what with all the cellestial mechanics, is the late Hall Clement. But because of time dilation http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/5223 greater progress has been maded, offworld. Earth is still Transhuman rather than Posthuman.

You make me wonder if there would have been a technological singularity. I get the feeling that we have read some of the same Authors. Justina Robson, Charles Stross, perhaps?

I wonder if you have read Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. It has some nice ideas about what ramifications, and possibilities time dilation could have.

Rogue Earth > Passage through The Asteroid Belt > Life
The Asteroid Belt is rich and prosperous, affording opportunity in preparation. So, how will dramatic conflict arise?

Transhumanity from Mars has given rise to Posthumanity populating the Asteroids.
