Martians have been done quite often in films, but in this case it has to be something that could convincingly take over the human at the end. One idea I had was something like Willo The Wisp, a character in a children's cartoon from the UK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAwtC0b_gf4 (Willo appears in full form at 0:25) It doesn't have to be the same shape, but something half-humanoid half-cloud (which I suppose is quite close to being a ghost really!) might be quite convincing as it possesses a human. Or maybe you have a better idea? Any suggestions welcome below!

When we think of mars what comes to mnd is a red baron planet full of dust and rocks. Volcanos and molten lava. My suggestion is a being of molten rock. A colourful and flexible character that melts into the human body at the end of themovie.

The intention is to have Mars, the martian, the spaceship etc done with CGI and the arrival on Earth shot on location, with the martian mixed in with the live action. (I'd rather film it all on location, but Mars is a bit difficult to get to right now.) I've been trying to do this short film myself using 3D modelling on a computer, but every graphics forum and site seems to be concerned with very high end PCs and very high quality graphics. I just don't have the money to buy the kind of machines and graphics packages that most sites talk about. I've tried to look into cheaper graphics packages, but they too have very high minimum specs. But this film doesn't have to look that good, it's just meant to be an amusing short, and a CGI application that runs on older PCs might be good enough to do this. So, this task consists of either: -Advice on how to render graphics cheaply on older (1ghz) PCs, preferably in Windows OR -Help with doing the CGI from someone who possesses a faster PC and a graphics package that will run on it

I think that POV-Ray does not require a very fast machine, because it should also work in Windows 95.

You can find it here: http://www.povray.org/download/

If you need processing power, I can help you out. I've got an overclocked Q6600 running at 3,5GHz and a decent video card. I must say I have no experience with blender, but a friend of mine has and perhaps he wants to help with the project as well. Let's just see if there are enough people who are interested in this film.

If you don't want to spend any money at all I recommend using Blender http://www.blender.org/ . It can nearly everything expensive package can also do, if you I find an older version it might run well enough on an older machine.
Also 1 GHz ist a pretty old computer, did you bought that in 2001 ? You should seriously considering buying something new, even the cheapest computer today are at least three times faster than your one.
If you read the Blenders requirement http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/requirements/ you see that you computer will run it, but you're still far away from the optimal specs.

In case some helps you making the CGI, look that you can go to his place regularly, because it will create a huge amount of data which is a pain to send over the net.
