Mother Aether > Air Sequence > Mini-camera on a radio controlled aeroplane or helicopter
by: (null)

Just saw this advertised on Verkkokauppa: http://www.verkkokauppa.com/popups/prodinfo.php?id=45232 Something like this could be easily mounted on a radio-controlled aeroplane or helicopter. I know the quality might not be what you're looking for, but perhaps you could use something more professional instead, on loan or hire? There are already a few mobile phone models with HD cameras (e.g. samsung i8910), so small HD camera modules do exist.

Thanks, David. We do have a summer cabin close to Jämijärvi airport and there is lots of RC hobby, paragliding, hang gliding and experimental aircraft activity over there. I'll try to get in touch with those people next summer. BTW, another great simulator you might want to try is http://www.realflight.com/ It's not open source and it's not cheap, but reputedly it is very, very good.

If you have a big RC helikopter I don't think you need a tiny camera, it could without a doubt lift an ordinary digital HD film camera that you can buy at the basic electronic store these days. My own RC helikopter has seen about 30 seconds of air time. I have taken it up twice, and crashed it twice. Now it sits and waits for me to afford to repair it and buy the Phoenix RC simulator (expensive...) so I can learn to fly with a virtual model and maybe not crash the physical one a third time... Contact an RC flight club. They generally have skilled fliers. Google for it, you should be able to find one in your vicinity. I did, and got some very helpful tips when I called and visited them. (Like getting the phoenix simulator, there is an open source simulator that I have used but they told me that that one is way too easy for learning to fly real models.)

Mother Aether > Fire Sequence > Schlieren Photography
General brainstorming about the fire sequence. What would be an interesting object to burn down? Do you have contacts in the fire department or pyrotechnic specialists who could help out with this sequence? Suggestions on a visually poetic scene involving fire welcome are welcome. If relatively unknown physics principles are involved, it's a bonus! Fire breathing? Chemiluminescence? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPT7q825gwI

Our sound man Mike has come up with a great idea for the fire sequence:

http://www.ian.org/Schlieren/HowTo.html

Mike's day job is a mad scientist, if you haven't figured that out yet.

Super interesting, I think we have something here! If we can find a suitable mirror, we can start figuring out what to shoot with this technique.. once we know the size of the objects we can use.

I find it especially fascinating that this technique can make normally invisible phenomen visible. Lots of creative possibilities to combine science with art here.

Mother Aether > Elemental cycles > If you use it, keep it as a background thing
by: (null)

It's an interesting theme to put in a film like this, but it might work best if it's kept as a background element which people can ignore if they want to. For example, perhaps the five characters could have subtle references to the five elements in their names or in something they wear. Those who don't know about these elements can ignore it, and those who do know about them can quietly appreciate the "joke".

Antti, thanks for the clarification, and that's a great example video, it uses a simple idea to say a lot. That style is right up my street, I think there should be more films like that. :) It's perhaps not exactly the same, but I did some "trailers" (music videos really) based on Star Wreck. Here's the "philosophical" one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQUGsvK0xQI With regard to the elements in Mother Aether, perhaps they could be referred to by something the characters wear (some kind of accessories, or patterns on their clothes) or the environment they're in when they appear in the film.

Mother Aether > Earth Sequence > Minerals?
General brainstorming about the Earth sequence. No ideas to present yet, this page is blank at the moment.. all ideas welcome. Will update the task description once something more tangible surfaces.

Close-up images of beautiful minerals, crystal, and gemstones in their raw form. Very "earthy" things imho.

...another poetical and easier way to shoot "arial" images?

That's not a bad idea either, but I think that there is only a very short window of opportunity during the year to shoot this.. maybe just a few days? Starlings in particular are famous for very big and beautiful flocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81wFZavdhPU

Just to clarify, the style of this film has been changed from a narrative short film to a more of a music video or art video. The dialogue will likely drop from "little" to "none". The names of the characters are not really relevant. Just to give a little idea of what kind of aesthetics I'm talking about, have a look at this sample video: http://vimeo.com/6921606 Effects driven art film might be a good way to summarize this style.

Mother Aether > Fire Sequence > Volcano!
by: Angela R.

Aside from actually burning things... perhaps you could find some interesting stock volcano/lava footage?
906 days ago | 0 Thumb-ups
Thanks for the idea. Yes, lots of stock footage is available, but I'd prefer to shoot something myself.. otherwise it would be more of an exercise in compilation and editing and sound design. Also, I would like to have people actually performing some sort of ritual with the fire and not use chromakey or other effects to achieve that. Using simulated lava or molten metal is not completely out of the question though. Perhaps a metal foundry could be found somewhere closeby, hmm.
