Great to see it evolve. :) I hope we see more advances, and eventually it would be interesting to see the final version alongside the first one.
Ian Moore gave a shot "Why not use Blender?" for Longing for Home

Longing for Home > Tree model needed > Why not use Blender?
Work: Cherry Tree model, toonish (See film for art style) Platform: Hash Animation:Master v12 or earlier Used in film: 1:45 to 2:27 (approx) Okay- let's be frank - my modeling has much to be desired. And my trees even more so. And since hash A:M has the import capabilities of "BWAHAHA, you must be kidding!", buying a premade model is simply a waist of money. The model needs to have a somewhat low-spline density and will be flat shaded to fit into the toonish rendering of the production. Do note: if anyone comes up with a better way of doing this shot (like via composting) I'm all ears.

From what I have seen of A:M, I really think you should use Blender. A:M cost $295.00 and a yearly subscription of $79.99! Are they crazy? It can't do half of the things that Blender can. It also has a strange plastic rendering whereas Blender's rendering can look totally natural. It's import/export facilities are very limited whereas Blender has a huge range. You could end up doing a lot of work in A:M and paying extra money to do things that could have been done in Blender - which is better and totally free!
You are also going to get a lot more help from people using Blender than people using A:M because there are a lot more Blender users.

Longing for Home > Blog: New, minor update to film - Shot 8
688 days ago | 0 Comments | 1 Thumb-up

Just a quick note that I've updated the film WIP on YouTube. I fiddled with Shot 8 so that the stars no longer look like they are pasted to the window. They weren't in the first place, but I had to correct for an optical illusion.

Need to still sit down and really evaluate some of the other shots before I can post more tasks here at Wrekamovie. The Savanah will probably be next on the docket, but I haven't decided that yet.

Going to be a slight pause in production again as I get some other RL deadline stuff out of the way. As Longing for Home is a side project for me, it gets the short end of the stick until my paying gigs are out of the way.

More coming soon-ish.

Longing for Home > Tree model needed > What can you import?
by: Nathan T. Champley

I am not familar with A:M but I use blender and it has massive export ability if there is a type of file that works best I can make your tree quite simply. I would be quite willing to do multiple exports and tinkering to get you a functional model. Alas I can't find an A:M MDL exporter.

A zip of the scene is if finally uploaded. It's in .3ds format, but should load correctly into Blender. There's also a flat arch there that roughly shows the camera arc in amongst the trees. Again, there is fudge room here, you don't have to match it perfectly. And your more than free to rearrange the tree layout. Sorry this took longer than anticipated to get uploaded.
