Four Immigrants and One Foreigner > The Russian female exchange student > Seven Reasons a Russian Exchange Student is a Problem "in the car pool".
by: Bob Cozzi

1) She was educated in Russia. 2) She is completely backwards in the way she sees the world. 3) She is always right. 4) She was raised by an Alcoholic father and a mother who looked the other way. 5) She has never been told "no" only that she's better than those in the West. 6) Only the good looking girls in Russia get to ride in cars--she now thinks she's very attractive since she's in the car. 7) Her hair is died blonde but she doesn't admit it when called out on it.

Geeze, I thought this was a request for why the Russian character was an problem. And being always right is only valid if you are actually always right vs. the disbelief that you could possible be wrong, even when you are.

What are the seven reasons why the Russian exchange student is a problem in the classroom?

The Russian girl should be an embedded journalist working on a 'doc'
or a pilot for a cross country show for MTV or something 'punky'...

better than a classroom - could be a 'field trip' - a cross country trip in a car...

And beyond all of Bob's suggestions, she should always sound correct -
even if her grammar is a bit more complex than traditional English...

This might prove an interesting wrinkle to Jani's suggestion...

Perhaps if she sounds imperial, (ie. super sanitized) the writer won't *only* have to rely on imperialist humor...

"bob! this is the information age. stop encouraging a culture of fear and a society of secretives; this is truly 'one world' that we live in and an open society of love and happiness. being always right is a great responsibility! it should be a privilege but you all keep making it into this curse!!!" ---

In all reviews, of all media types from tv to books to movies, conflict or a tense situation often holds the most attention.

If the opening scene or sequence is of one of them threatening another with something (can be anything from the comedic to the dangerous). Then break down the why is bits of flash back for the other characters. Offer the viewer the different perspectives. This would act as both an introduction to the character's personalities and ideals, as well as give a starting point for the series.

What happens at the end? Leave it a cliff hanger. Lost did an excellent job of that. ;) I'd take notes from that show.

To create a smashing first episode, you need to get (at least some) of the characters to meet together at a dramatic setting.

Let's say one of the immigrants has been here for a while. He/she has managed to fulfill the "immigrant dream" to a degree - he/she has started an own business or found a dream job, learned to speak the language and to understand the society.. All is going well....Until these three characters show up...

They don't know anything about living in Finland. They all come from areas that, in their native settings, would conflict with each other. Is it possible to leave that conflict behind in a new setting, a new country, a new life?

And to cap it off, a Finn with no understanding of the reality of immigrants happens to stumble into their lives for his/her own motives.

Any way you chose to write these 5 characters, conflict AND understanding would be inevitable. It could be priceless..
