Progress report - things are moving forwards even if it doesn't seem like it

Posted November 30, 2009 by David Jansson 2 Thumb-ups

The story so far:

Writing is a bitch. I tend to scare everyone that tries to help away with my very strict vision of what I want this film to be. Earthgov needs to be reformed, and the scene of earth society with it. However, the writing task now has what should be adequate info for people to effectively participate: http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/441

Having solved the UV unwrapping of the alien ship I soon realized that it wasn't done. Now I am having trouble unwrapping a simple square thing. The UV unwrap protocols in blender needs some work or I am doing something wrong. Could be either. Anyway, it means a bit too much work is being spent on something that should be easy.

I have finished a drawing for the opening sequence and gotten started the second one. (See the storyboard image attached the concept art gallery task.) Do you think I should post the finished drawing in the concept art gallery or should I wait with unveiling some things until the film is done?

Earthgov needs to mature. Without loosing their role. And I find it hard, so I once again point to this task: Redefine Earthgov; http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/854

Maybe I need to make "The wrong alien to upset" more mature as well. For Earthgov and the main characters I am trying my damndest to not make them too simplified. Maybe it's as easy as downplaying the total annihilation part. I am thinking that maybe they would just do what the main characters might end up doing anyway. (Story ending not set in stone yet.) Take their technology from them and bring them back to the middle ages. It would be an interesting irony, that what they initially set out to stop becomes exactly the solution they themselves use, in the end.

Blenderartist isn't good page, and that boog is a little bit messy. I think we know everything, that is needed but it's still annoying. Blender don't have the right tools to make those things easy.

UV problems are soooooooo annoying! Maybe you should post that to Blender developers...

Sometimes you need to rethink your way

Posted November 24, 2009 by David Jansson 2 Thumb-ups

I realized that I in the writing of my story was swerving in a direction I just didn't want to go.

In my efforts to write a political science fiction film I let my own point of view demonize the antagonists. It is those of the opposite point of view that I want to give something that makes them think twice.

Trying to evoke constructive thought by demonizing never, ever, works. You will just piss them off. Constructive thought is hard if you are pissed off, whichever side you are on. *

That's why have started this task: http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/854 "Redefine earthgov - give me your insights into information politics"

* (That's why political debates contain so many personal attacks, it isn't what is said in the attack, most people see through it as a silly personal attack, it's the simmering emotions of the attacked that makes it hard to formulate constructive arguments that the attacker is after... It's always harder to think straight when you are upset. The audience won't loose any faith in you because of an out of the air allegation made against you, they will loose faith in you because the allegation affects your judgement in the rest of the debate.)

Major story task update

Posted November 13, 2009 by David Jansson 2 Thumb-ups

http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/441

I had three story tasks that were all inadequately described. I have now merged them into one, as well as added additional information that will help if you want to write for this story.

Some of the information is in a shot, as the task description got a bit too long:
http://www.wreckamovie.com/shots/show/4330
This shot details what kind of presentation this movie uses and some things you need to think about when writing for it.

Please have a look.

Thank you.

I know about announcements but they are bit weird to me also... I don't know anything about how do they work or what they are... and no one else seems to be using them either.

David, how long you are planning to make from this film?

David Jansson November 14, 2009 23:16 Flag

What do announcements do? Do only the members of the production get them? Where do they show up?

Peter Vesterbacka November 14, 2009 15:00 Flag

David, you can also use the Announcements for these kind of announcements. That way you can easily link all the related tasks. Check it out and give it a try.

Character descriptions up

Posted October 31, 2009 by David Jansson 0 Thumb-ups

I have now written somewhat comprehensive character descriptions for the most important characters of my animated space opera. Hopefully these will help people who want to help me write the script see and share my vision of where I want to go with the story.

Cast of characters:

Main characters
The Alien:
Explorer, collector, curious. Comes to earth on its own behalf, but helps introduce the galactic society as is the custom of galactic society to let any individual take such an initiative.
Androgynous. The creature will be human in the sense that it is driven by the same things. In this movie curiosity and love is treated as universal concepts. The Alien has humour as seen in one scene where the human man asks the alien "What gender are you?" and The Alien roguishly answers "Does it matter?" The Aliens role in the story can be described as a guide and protector with consoling empathy. When Earth turn to full dictatorship in the absence of our protagonists The Alien has no qualms about helping our two humans try to save humanity from upsetting the wrong powerfull alien.

The chosen to join the Alien to learn about the galaxy:

The man:
Chosen by the government. When the alien picks the woman not from the Reality show contestants but from the street he is chosen mainly for his skills in manipulation and seduction rather than Xenopology, which would otherwise be the logical choice. He is Hollywood handsome and charismatic. His attempts to seduce the woman gradually turns into a desperate seeking for attention and comfort as he is struck by culture shock from the realisation of how the Open Galactic Net works. A form of society he has been told would inevitably collapse in on itself. Compassion is an important part of why the open galactic net works, something most of humanity long since lost their faith in. He is, like most men, a cynic, and as a cynic has problems dealing with the fact of the pointlessness of a cynical view of life. To take the edge off the alien gives him access to the Earth history that the ship recorded on its approach. But learning about how Earth once had a democratic movement and an open international net that was a lot closer to real democracy than the theatre of his contemporary Earth doesn't make him less confused.

The woman:
Chosen by the alien, who realizes that the representative of the government is unlikely to understand or handle the shape of intergalactic culture in the open galactic net. She i considered to be a deviant by her peers, choosing not to see the beauty surgeon despite being slightly overweight and thus standing out from the epitome of beauty as defined by the entertainment industry. Her grandfather was part of the Open source "movement". She is intelligent and strong willed, and as all intelligent and strong willed individuals in a rigid society she has this nagging feeling that there must be more to existence than everyday life of Earth society. She has few friends and works as a billboard designer. As would be expected she is doubtful about embarking on a journey that although only a short time will pass for her near the speed of light will mean that a hundred years have passed when she returns. Goaded by her grandfather to seize the moment she eventually accepts.

Other important characters

Earthgov:
Conservative, firm believers in the concept of market economy and that they know what is best for all. The most important, although unofficial, member is the minister of entertainment. His job is to make sure that society accepts what Earthgov deems to be best for them, be it through subterfuge, lies or manipulation. When reports of the Open galactic net starts to trickle in it is the minister of entertainment that is given the task to turn the Open galactic net into something to fear and organize against. And somewhere in the subtext you begin to wonder what really scares them, if it is a society where everyone is free to take any information they please, or if it is a society where anyone willingly gives and shares, making any rigid power structure obsolete.

The wrong Alien to upset:
For this/these creatures humanity is a gnat, although a gnat with potential to grow. When Earthgov sends a fleet for the closest stargates to either contact an empire outside the galactic net for allies or if this fails close access from the open Galactic net automated exterminators will meet them. They are of the fire and forget variety, and extermination will be total, unless our protagonists can persuade them that they will deal with the problem in a less, distanced, manner.

Find the Orwellian reference

I added a reference to 1984 in the organized script document.

Whoever finds it first gets a virtual cookie.

It's subtle. :)

Nice trick to get interest to your script. I tried to put 1984 to Wordpad search but you haven't made this too easy :)
