ABSCHIEDE - Five Goodbyes > The Film is completed - What now? > The traditional route..
by: Armando Saldanamora

The traditional route (from someone who works in Hollywood) is: >Get your film in the Festival Circuit >Try to get as many reviews as you can (printed press works better than blogs) >Book screenings of your film in big cities. Send invitations to local studio execs and distributors >Keep a blog documenting all of these events. Mail every update to all distributors The idea here is to: a) give your film a good context (make it seem like a "hot property that's going around") b) create some "buzz." When a distributor sees it announced at a festival, you want him/her to think "oh, yeah. I've heard about it before."

Hehe, yeah, we'll think about it. I learned alot about the festival circuit through my first feature Pixelschatten (www.pixelschatten.com) and while you can easily send around a film for free to festivals in Europe, you need a worldwide budget if you want to send it around. But let's see what we can come up with :)

Time to go through the non-traditional route, then. In any case, I'd risk it and try to get the movie into some festivals. Worst thing they can say is "no."

ABSCHIEDE - Five Goodbyes > The Film is completed - What now? > What about Vodo.net?
by: Kalle Max Hofmann

If your main interest is to get it out to as many viewers as possible, get some feedback and possibly some veeeery little donations, you could ask vodo.net to release it. If they put it up as a promoted release, you will get 100.000+ downloads and possibly around 1000$ worth of donations... just have a look at the site if this is what you're lookin for!

yeah, I think it might be worth the effort to contact theatres and get a few people together. I like the idea of bringing the independent experience back into theatres or local places :-) btw, if you want to see the film, add me on Facebook.

I know what you mean. On a platform like Youtube, such a film is completely wasted because people don't really pay attention. In that sense, Vodo is at least better than Youtube, because people download it and then potentially sit down to watch it. Still I agree that it's not the best option. So probably you should go with Armando's idea first and try some festivals. Another idea would be to directly contact small indie movie theaters and ask them if they would screen the film for one night or something like that... of course this takes some research effort but I think it's quite feasible.

Hey Armando, thanks for your ideas. The very interesting thing about this film is that it's not really marketable. It's also not really festival fare. It's too difficult, it's very much an experimental arthouse anthology, and I think it needs a special form of distribution, one that works like spreading a handmade zine. I really appreciate the points you mentioned, but I fear that this is not a movie that could create a buzz. But there is something emotional in it, like in a painting, that people can connect to, if they access outside of festivals and traditional distribution. Its also a very difficult movie, one you better watch in your living room or in a small arthouse theatre, just because you need an attention span and maybe a glass of wine. Do you have more ideas how to work outside the system?

Hi Kalle, vodo.net seems like a great VOD option. So if we wanna put it online, this would be a great option. I'm still thinking about finding an alternate experience of watching this film. This is a very arthousy movie, it's not easy to watch, you need an attention span, it would be actually great to watch it in a living room or a small arthouse cinema. It doesn't really work as a web video. Do you have any ideas for how to make the viewing of the film a happening?

Hey guys, our film is finally finshed. It's independent. And we can do with it what we want to. What are your ideas for any kind of distribution? Generating a bit of money would be fine, but most important is the DIY-idea behind it. We want to spread it like a mixtape that you would give to your family and friends. "ABSCHIEDE - Five Goodbyes" is a very unique film. It works more like a classic arthouse film that you would watch at a theatre, rather than a video that was made for the web. It's that kind of movie that needs a high attention span :-) So what are your incredible ideas for spreading the film? We have an HD online version, but how to get it into peoples living rooms or even into local theatres? Would you watch an German arthouse film with your friends? Any idea is welcome, even if you think it's totally crazy, let me know! Anil Jacob Kunnel The ABSCHIEDE Team www.abschiede.com

Hey guys,

I just wanted to shoot a short but big THANK YOU to everyone who supported us during this year. The film is done and we're really proud of the result, a very unique arthouse anthology that has only cost 2.700 Euros and was made by a group of friends. I hope this is a heads up to everyone who is suffering through similar difficult productions. We're not sure what to do with the film now, but are open to every suggestion. I just want to spread it like a mixtape :-)

Cheers
