Some more compact views

Posted February 23, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 4 Thumb-ups

The development team has been busy again and we have added and fixed some things you have asked for.

Compact views

We have made the list / browse views of people, tasks and films a lot more compact. Now you can see a lot more information on the screen and it's also easier to read. Check it out.

Custom production pages

The custom production pages are now tested and in production. The first two can be found here:

http://www.wreckamovie.com/custom/innovator
http://www.wreckamovie.com/custom/iron-sky

If you want a customized version for you production, let us know. First priority will be given to productions with over 100 wreckers. Yes, looking at you Snowblind, Griffin and Norwegian Ninja;-)

We have also done some fixes and fine tuning behind the scenes. The site should now be much faster. We have also put in place some new things that should help identify and eliminate spammers much faster. Let's see if it works, you never know with those devious little spammers, the always come up with new ways to disturb you.

Happy Wrecking!

Looks good!

It is easier to read, and I'm sure it'll make life easier for people browsing on lower-resolution devices like mini-laptops and mobile phones.

Peter Vesterbacka February 23, 2010 22:14 Flag

Glad you like it! We hope to get a mobile optimized version done too, but just haven't had the time to get it done yet. More and more mobile users, so we want to make that experience much better as well.

Matti Delahay February 24, 2010 09:13 Flag

Great work! My working laptop has a small enough screen so I really don't mind the compact views. :)

Custom pages look very fine as well!

David Jansson February 24, 2010 09:27 Flag

As someone who often reads up on Wreck a movie on his mobile I can say that it still has some way to go before being mobile friendly.

Hmm. But the text never gets wider than the mobile screen. Was it like that before? Because if not, that is a major improvement for mobile devices. I still have to scroll a whole lot sideways to find the text though.

Kris S. February 24, 2010 13:05 Flag

David, which phone and which browser are you using?

If you have a Java-compatible phone you might want to try Opera Mini, it's free and really good.

Peter Vesterbacka February 24, 2010 14:17 Flag

David, agree that we are far from mobile friendly today, but at least we have mobile friendly on our roadmap. We'll get there eventually.

Daniel Saarimäki February 24, 2010 14:33 Flag

David, there is a function in my Opera Mini and Nokia browsers, that everyhting that is out from the screen sideways, will be set to another line. It can cut of the free space and you don't have to scroll sideways at all.

Peter, no hurry with that mobile page. New phones are supporting full-size pages more and more better.

Kris S. February 24, 2010 14:52 Flag

Like Daniel says, even cheap models are getting more web-friendly.

One thing I would ask for is to make a version that's more touch-friendly. Small links are fine if you have a pointer like a mouse or stylus, but if someone tries to just use their fingers on WAM they have to do a lot of zooming.

There are some touch-friendly templates out there which WAM could feed content into, and display it automatically if they detect that they're being viewed with a touchscreen device.

Daniel Saarimäki February 24, 2010 15:22 Flag

Try to scale links from your browser settings.

Kris S. February 24, 2010 15:52 Flag

Not all touch devices have link-scaling options... (I have to use a lot of different touch devices for work).

Daniel Saarimäki February 24, 2010 15:55 Flag

I know that and it's a difficult problem.

Peter Vesterbacka February 24, 2010 16:32 Flag

Kris, will make the mobile version very much about touch. I think that the touch web is the next big thing (there's already 320k+ touch optimized web sites out there) and touching Wreckamovie sounds good to me;-)

Nothing much;-)

Posted February 11, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 3 Thumb-ups

Added a few more things to Wreckamovie again, most of the activity this time around was to fix and tweak stuff behind the scenes, but there are a few visible things as well.

More activity streams

Added individual activity streams for all productions. Just click on the activity tab on the production page and you will see what has been done on that particular production. Easy way to catch up on all the latest action and hopefully makes it easier to focus on particular productions.

Custom production pages

We are testing customized production pages, the first one can be found here:

http://www.wreckamovie.com/custom/innovator

The idea here is that we want to make it possible for productions to have most of their web needs covered by Wreckamovie. We all know that it takes a lot of effort to make a movie, so if the website for the movie kind of happens as a side effect of the collaboration here on Wreckamovie, great. Saves a lot of work + hopefully we can offer a few things on top of the average movie promotion site. This is very early days, but you get the idea + we really want to hear your feedback and ideas on this. It's not perfect, but we will be improving based on what you tell us. So please do tell us what you think!

We also managed to find the problem that caused the site to become very slow at times, so the experience should now be much better.

Some of the things we are working on right now include a solution for more storage. As part of that we are also working on gallery / portfolio features for individual wreckers and productions.

And with all the new features, we are also starting to put more effort into a bigger re-design of the site. We want to keep Wreckamovie as simple and easy to use as possible, and right now it's a bit cluttered here and there, so we need to do better. This will take some time, but just wanted to let you know that we are working on it.

Happy wrecking! And have fun in Berlin, all of you who are there for the Berlin Film Festival, please wreck the place for us;-)

That site slowing problem was soooo annoying. It sometimes took about 20 minutes to post one comment. I really hope that it's gone now.

David Jansson February 11, 2010 20:06 Flag

How much custom? Just colours or the whole layout?

They had the ability to change the whole layout on Deviant art, now It was deviant art, the place have a lot of talent, so the customized pages usually looked damn good. But it made surfing peoples profile pages damn annoying as the buttons and different gallery links were never in the same place, you needed a minute to figure out a new layout every time you landed on a customized profile and gallery page.

I can't remember if they dropped the whole concept or if there is a box in my account settings that says "always show standard layout" that I checked.

Am I the only one that wants the main page animations gone? (I know I must be sounding naggy, but those things are real stressful for me. If there wasn't for Adblock I would hardly use the Internet at all...)

Edit: Never mind, I just realized that I could add them to the adblock filter...

Peter Vesterbacka February 11, 2010 21:05 Flag

The performance should be OK now, but we'll keep an eye on it and try to keep it that way.

With the custom pages we intend to offer both views, ie you can have the custom view, but always also the "standard" Wreckamovie view. The custom pages will also work as standalone, that way you can use them as the site for your movie. Early days, so we'll see how it develops.

A few new things and a handful of fixes

Posted January 28, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 4 Thumb-ups

We've added quite a few new twists and tweaks to Wreckamovie over the last few weeks, and this week is no exception to that. At the same time we are working on reducing the clutter and keep things as simple as possible, so expect to see some less is more action from us too.

Trailer / teaser videos on top

We moved the videos on the production page to the top + made it bigger, so that is now the first thing you see when you hit the production page. Looks better + gives the most important content the best spot. No big development involved, but part of our effort to make the production pages more attractive and functional. You will see more in this area soon.

Fixes

-fixed uploading of various file types (WAV, AVI etc should all work now)
-news comments show properly in activity stream
-group tasks not shown unless you are part of the group
-deleted items don't show in activity stream
-streamlined registration & invites a bit
-various smaller fixes as usual

What's up next?

We are working on making the production pages more customizable. As part of that also working on making the news section better, adding more flexibility on RSS feeds and some other tweaks.

A bit further out we'll also have more of a press kit capability as part of the production pages, really looking at how we can make it easier for productions to promote what's going on to the world.

Another thing that has come up many times from many of you is the need for more storage and easier sharing of whatever content is needed in the production. We are pretty far in our investigation of the various options and we will have much better functionality and capacity in the not too distant future.

That's it for this week, back to work;-)

Sounds great, looking forward to the future updates too. :)

Kris S. February 09, 2010 18:41 Flag

Noticed one of the productions already has a customised page, looks nice!

Peter Vesterbacka February 09, 2010 19:45 Flag

Yes, we are testing the custom production pages with one production, there's a few more coming soon. And some other small features and fixes as usual.

New week, new features

Posted January 18, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 8 Thumb-ups

Time for another week and another set of new features here on Wreckamovie:

Sharing:

Added a share button to productions, tasks, shots and news items. Makes it easier to share stuff to Facebook, Twitter, Digg and other sites.

Activity stream

You can now give thumbs up directly from the stream. Useful for short shots and comments that show up completely in the stream.

Comments

You can now find the comments made just like shots made. Your own under the My Comments tab and comments by others under the Comments tab.

And as usual some small fixes here and there, nothing major.

The next batch of new features will be live early next week. We are trying to get some new stuff out every week now, so expect a shorter list of new features, but also a shorter time to get them to you.

Happy wrecking!

A thumb up and yet another thank you to the development team. Already been using the "sharing" button the last couple of days. And absolutely love the "My comments" tab! :)

Angela January 18, 2010 12:01 Flag

...although the "sort by thumb up" bit does not seem to work quite right?
Or is it just my browser that is hating me?

Peter Vesterbacka January 18, 2010 12:02 Flag

Glad you like the sharing and comments:-) There's a lot more in the pipeline, we hope to get busy with some bigger new features next.

Peter Vesterbacka January 18, 2010 13:26 Flag

There might be a bit of fine tuning needed on the thumb up bit. Doesn't seem to update the count in the activity stream view, but it registers properly anyway. Will be fixed in the next release next week.

Angela January 18, 2010 13:30 Flag

No worries about that... good things take time! :) However what I meant was, that within the "My Comments" tab, sorting the list by "Thumb up" does not seem to work properly form me. Have you seen that?

Joonas Aarnio January 18, 2010 15:12 Flag

Angela, we noticed that also, and we'll try to get it fixed for the next release.

Angela January 18, 2010 15:15 Flag

That's all I ever wanted to hear. Thanks for your continued efforts! :)

Kris S. January 18, 2010 17:14 Flag

Well done WAM staff, thank you. :)
