Wreckamovie will be at Assembly

Posted July 29, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 6 Thumb-ups

We will be at the Assembly event in Helsinki showing the integration of Wreckamovie and Renderfarm.fi.

http://www.assembly.org/summer10/

We will also have a very special guest at Assembly, Kalle-Max of Snowblind fame will be there to talk about Vampyre Princess 3D. I'm sure we'll get to see how the new renderfarm functionality will be put into great use in that project as well.

If you happen to have your way to Helsinki and Assembly, please come by and say hi!

I hope you have enough material from WAM Festival.

Angela Ruggero July 30, 2010 21:28 Flag

They will have the Dreamteam at the very least. ;)

Peter Vesterbacka July 30, 2010 21:37 Flag

Yes, the Dreamteam and Kalle, can't beat that. It's a great honor!

Samuli Jomppanen July 31, 2010 13:38 Flag

I might be making appearance there too. If i get everything sorted out.

Peter Vesterbacka July 31, 2010 17:02 Flag

Would be great to see you there Samuli!

Samuli Jomppanen July 31, 2010 19:18 Flag

Indeed, actually very interested to meet you people face to face. Not that my face is much to look at. But still...

Julius Tuomisto August 03, 2010 23:05 Flag

Check out the Renderfarm.fi stand program (and especially our cool official banner for the event) at http://www.renderfarm.fi/assembly2010

You can get your own copy of the banner from the stand in full colour A2 by stating the secret code "I pledge allegiance .." :)

Kris S. August 10, 2010 12:02 Flag

The Renderfarm posters were absolutely great, we took lots of pictures next to one. :)

Julius Tuomisto August 10, 2010 16:10 Flag

Cool that you liked it. Jani did a fantastic job I think too. :)

Work in progress

Posted July 05, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 2 Thumb-ups

The team has been really busy (again) getting some new features added to Wreckamovie. Had to rush things a bit, but everything should work...

Production Widgets

You can now find a Wreckamovie widget for every production on the production home/info page. Grab the code and put your favorite production on your own website. And let us know what else should be in the widget and what other type of widgets you would like to see.

Polling / Ranking

We are rolling out this functionality bit by bit. It's based on the standard Wreckamovie thumbs up functionality. You can see what it looks like in the Opera By You production right here:

http://www.wreckamovie.com/tasks/show/1434

We added the same kind of view to all tasks, you can now see which shots have gotten the most thumbs up for every task here on Wreckamovie. We have gotten quite a few requests to make it easier to find top shots and navigate the tasks, this is a small first step in that direction. With more and bigger productions this is clearly something that needs to be improved and we are working on that.

And as usual, there have been some smaller fixes and tweaks done as well in the background to keep things running smoothly.

Kalle Max Hofmann July 05, 2010 18:28 Flag

The poll feature is cool, how do you activate it?

As a notorious nitpicker I have to criticize though; I don't like it's connected to the normal thumbs-up function. I think that button is also often used to acknowledge participation or thoughts in a good direction, but that is way different from saying: THIS is the BEST shot of the lot!

So maybe more development should go into that, but as you said the work will continue... It's definitely a good start :D

Joonas Aarnio July 05, 2010 18:53 Flag

As said, this is just an early stage of polls. We will almost certainly take the votes separate from thumbs (karma) and make it a bit easier for production leaders to choose the participating shots or whatever they want ( selecting a director by voting, maybe? ;) )

Peter Vesterbacka July 05, 2010 19:26 Flag

The way the polling is implemented is not necessarily steering things in a direction in which the thumbs up is saying THIS is the BEST shot. You can vote for more than one, so it supports the philosophy of acknowledging good work and stuff you like for one reason or another. The reason I headlined the news on this Work in progress is because it very much is, this is the first quick hack and the intent as always is to get feedback to make it better.

As Joonas says, we might very well do a bit of a separate polling feature with more bells and whistles, but what is kind of cool with what we have now is that it works for all tasks right away. Of course it needs a bit of fine tuning and more polish, but at least we have something to play with.

The polling or ranking feature is just one part of the feature set we are working on to make production leaders on here more productive. The task leader functionality that we launched last week is part of the same set, we are looking at how to move shots onwards to new tasks and stuff like that. Things quite a few have asked for and we hope to put the summer months into good use and get some long overdue features live.

In any case, stay tuned for more in the not too distant future;-)

Kalle Max Hofmann July 13, 2010 22:17 Flag

Erm couldn't you put an option in the "edit task" area where you can determine how many shots should be ranked, with the chance of disabling this feature by entering a zero?

Really this is a nice feature, a great step in the right direction, but not every task needs it I think ^_^

Peter Vesterbacka July 19, 2010 15:57 Flag

We will improve this a lot going forward, this is also why I titled this piece of news work in progress. Will make the poll optional, agree that not every task needs it. We just had to get this done in a hurry in order to support the OperaByYou project and their polling.

I got an Something went wrong page.

Was going to post in the bug report forum, but I got it there too...

Daniel Saarimäki July 23, 2010 15:10 Flag

What the.... Almost all tasks are down! O.O

Joonas Aarnio July 23, 2010 18:44 Flag

Ok, I'm looking into it. Be patient, it'll be fixed (hopefully) tonight.

EDIT: Should be fixed now, let me know if there are still non-working tasks.

Kalle Max Hofmann July 28, 2010 16:34 Flag

Cool, there's an "analytics" tab in the tasks now... doesn't lead anywhere yet tho ^_^

Peter Vesterbacka July 28, 2010 22:56 Flag

Yes, the guys added analytics for all production leaders, hope you like it.

Markku Tähtinen July 29, 2010 07:04 Flag

The analytics tab works now correctly. If there's anything weird or inaccurate in your analytics page, please report.

New tools for production leaders

Posted June 21, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 10 Thumb-ups

The last few weeks we have been keeping busy with some new tools for production leaders. Some of the productions here are getting pretty large, and we have had requests for tools to help run things more efficiently.

Task Leader

First in our roll-out of the new functionality for production leaders is the capability to assign leaders for specific tasks. The production leader can assign a leader for a specific task by simply clicking on the new Assign Task Leader button on the left hand side in tasks. The selected task leader will get a request in MyWreck and can then decide to either accept or decline the honor of leading the task.

The task leader can then share the shots he or she thinks are the best with the production leader by simply marking them into Favorites. These Favorites are automatically shared with the production leader.

The thinking behind the task leader functionality is that the production leader can assign others to watch certain tasks on his or her behalf and only get notified of the end results. This should enable more and bigger tasks with more people helping sort through the shots.

We are working on more tools for the production leaders and also on making the Task Leader functionality richer. At the same time we are not forgetting about making the overall wrecking experience better, we just wanted to focus a bit on making life easier for the production leaders in particular.

Where did the "Mark all as read"-button go?????

Kalle Max Hofmann June 22, 2010 17:21 Flag

That's a good question indeed, Daniel!

Thierry Gschwind June 22, 2010 17:25 Flag

Yeah, I miss that. Specially to get read of the task suggestion that I've already clicked away for the 100th times.

Joonas Aarnio June 24, 2010 10:04 Flag

Daniel, Kalle Max, Thierry: That seems to be a bug a new feature is causing to mywreck, we'll look into it.

Daniel Saarimäki June 24, 2010 10:36 Flag

Okay. My Mywreck is filling up with crap...

Daniel Saarimäki June 24, 2010 11:49 Flag

Removing that button could be good, but you should add some filters or something like that to prevent silly stuff filling the Mywreck.

Markku Tähtinen June 24, 2010 12:42 Flag

Mark all read -button and recent stuff are now back. Thanks for pointing that out.

Daniel Saarimäki June 24, 2010 13:19 Flag

Wreckamovie (beta) store now live

Posted May 14, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 5 Thumb-ups

One of the features that we have been busy with last few weeks (and months) is the store functionality for the productions here on Wreckamovie. Happy to announce that we managed to get the beta version of it live just in time for the Cannes Film Festival.

The first production to have it's own store is Snowblind, you can see it at:

http://snowblind.wreckamovie.com

There's only one product in there right now and that's the individual frames that you have been able to buy at the Snowblind site for quite a while. Feel free to test the new store and buy a frame or two, you will be supporting the Snowblind production by doing that.

Going forward we will enable access to the store functionality for other productions as well, we hope to be able to help provide a very easy and simple way for any production to handle merchandizing.

The Wreckamovie store functionality is just a small part of what we are working on as part of providing more tools and services for the productions here on Wreckamovie, so stay tuned for more in the not too distant future.

And as always, go ahead and test the store and please let us know what else you would like to see.

Happy wrecking!

Nice to see this live...! :)

Kalle Max Hofmann May 14, 2010 14:19 Flag

That's awesome, Peter! Thanks a lot :D

Angela Ruggero May 14, 2010 15:19 Flag

Wee! Time to get goodies!

Order placed. All seemed to work here.

Just wondering if anything more should display next to / instead of: ""Your order is successfully processed - What happens next..." when one gets sent back to WAM from the PayPal page,

Aside from that - love it!!!

Thank you guys for implementing such a useful functionality!

Daniel Saarimäki May 14, 2010 16:53 Flag

That's a good thing to hear. Stickman humor comics are waiting for that store :D

Jani Salomaa May 17, 2010 18:50 Flag

WAM is just 2 1/2 years old, and it keeps getting better so fast it's almost worrisome what it'll be like in a year or two... Great job guys!!

Daniel Saarimäki May 17, 2010 18:54 Flag

Is WAM just 2 1/2 years old???????

Kris S. May 17, 2010 19:36 Flag

WAM was founded in 2008 but I think they only opened up to everyone a bit later?

Anyway, Iron Sky was the first production and that's dated February 2008.

Jani Salomaa May 17, 2010 19:47 Flag

Daniel - Oops. It's a bit older than that - i just looked at the archives.. Can't remember or find the launch date. I got here in April 2008...

Thierry Gschwind May 17, 2010 19:53 Flag

I think WAM was launched in the second half of 2007, but at that time you could just register, and nothing else.
The in early 2008 cam Iron Sky, and in later 2008 you could have you own production, that's basically when it started to grow.

Kalle Max Hofmann May 17, 2010 19:55 Flag

If Iron Sky launched in February 2008 then WAM is two and a half years old in August 2010, isn't it? BTW I really suck at math ;P

Carl Morys May 18, 2010 22:17 Flag

I just saw youtube is only 5 years old! Sometimes time goes very fast, and sometimes very slow ;-D

Customized productions

Posted May 03, 2010 by Peter Vesterbacka 3 Thumb-ups

We have been pretty busy implementing some major new features for Wreckamovie the last few weeks and that's why it's been quiet on the platform news front. The next big release will make the production store available for selected productions, but before that we decided to switch on the customized production pages.

Customized productions

It's now possible to have a custom look and feel for the productions here on Wreckamovie. The idea is to support the look and feel and branding of the movies better. This is is becoming much more important now that we are starting to see the first movies started on Wreckamovie actually get finished and hit distribution. Some of the first examples of custom production pages can be found here:

http://snowblind.wreckamovie.com
http://norwegianninja.wreckamovie.com
http://landing.wreckamovie.com
http://iron-sky.wreckamovie.com
http://innovator.wreckamovie.com

This is still work in progress, but I think some of the pages look really cool already. Check them out and let us know what you think.

Another nice development over the last few days was that we passed 4000 registered wreckers on Wreckamovie:-) Yay! On our way to 5 digits;-)

Happy wrecking!

Sami Laulajainen May 03, 2010 13:31 Flag

That is nice, the pages look awesome. The "innovator" is missing the WAM - bar. Intentionally? Those are the pages that I would like to link in my homepage or use as a homepage.

I'll be sending 2D for LEV too, or is the option to custom coming for project leaders?

Sami Laulajainen May 03, 2010 13:35 Flag

And the logout link in Innovator did nothing.

Kris S. May 03, 2010 14:59 Flag

I should add the Landing one is still in testing, we haven't finished tweaking it yet... :)

Once it's ready we'll announce it with a news story over on the Landing production page.

Seppo Hiltunen May 03, 2010 16:48 Flag

Looks fine.

But on second thought members of more productions than only one must adapt themselves to navigate on different looking web-pages. That disturbs a bit the usability.

Is there going to be an option that one may use the production skin or wreckamovie skin to use WAM?

Matti Delahay May 03, 2010 17:03 Flag

Very cool custom pages, looking forward to seeing Landing's page in it's full finished glory too. :)

Joonas Aarnio May 03, 2010 17:06 Flag

Seppo: we totally agree with you. That's why custom layouts are only available through custom url (like those Peter mentioned) or link from the productions front page. This way productions can promote theirselves with their custom-layout and short and easy-to-remember url and if someone only wants to surf around WAM and look for tasks etc, they always see the default layout.

Peter Vesterbacka May 03, 2010 19:33 Flag

Sami, the Innovator is intentionally missing the top bar, but the logout should work. Need to look into that.

You can send us the look and feel you would like to have for LEV and we'll take care of it. Don't yet have the tools for productions leaders.

It's still work in progress, so everything might not work perfectly. And this was just a small update, we are busy with more for this week already.

Jani Salomaa May 03, 2010 21:48 Flag

Fine improvement - draws the wrecker into a production. And it kinda shows the dedication to WAM by the production leaders.

I agree with Seppo, though, it would be nice if one could choose whether to see the spiced up version or the vanilla one. But only if that can be done without too much hassle. I can easily live with alternating looks.

Kris - If you don't change the color scheme, I'll go blind in a week staring at that black-on-dark-gray and will be unable to contribute. Love the background image, though! XO

Kris S. May 03, 2010 22:39 Flag

Jani, like Joonas says, the idea of custom pages is to provide a "public" face for a production that would be advertised on posters (landing.wreckamovie.com). People actually doing the production would by default carry on seeing the current colour scheme at wreckamovie.com/landing.

BUT... yeah, it would be a problem if viewers don't like the colour scheme either. :)

Some stuff still needs to be tweaked on it, then I'll set up a task asking for feedback.

Peter Vesterbacka May 04, 2010 08:23 Flag

Our thinking behind the customized production pages is to make it easier to project the look and feel and branding in general for each production. This is also the thinking behind some of our upcoming new features, we want to provide some good and truly useful tools for the production leaders here on Wreckamovie. Ideally one should be able to address most of the needs of a generic movie website with Wreckamovie, with the added benefit of getting stuff done on here while working closely with the community and fans. Collaborative filmmaking in other words;-)

At the same time as we are adding support for customized production pages, we are keeping the "normal" layout as well. One of the big values of Wreckamovie is that one can work and contribute to several productions, makes the overall community much more engaged and it's about more than just making one movie or one production. Not the Hollywood model of "one night stands" / one hit wonders, but more of a continuous engagement and dialog. Or at least that's how we are approaching this when we are looking at new features.
